As promised, after dinner and homework Parker sat at the piano and practiced. After some quick scales, notes of music could be heard throughout the entire house, the piece played nearly perfectly.

Matais: [laughs] Unbelievable. What was the bet?
Parker: A booster pack of voidcritters to Bethany if you asked Athena out before Christmas break, versus her Blarffy Bear to me if it was after.
Matais: Parker, if you wanted a Blarffy Bear, all you had to do was ask, not make bets with a three year old to con her out of it.
Parker: So can I get a Blarffy Bear?
Matais: Maybe for Christmas, if you tell me about the frogs.
Parker: You drive a hard bargain, Pops.
And with that, Matais discovered that his daughter was a con artist had the permission of the only person who mattered. The only thing left to do was actually buck up the courage to ask Athena out.
After Max left, Parker and Matais sat down to a lovely dinner prepared by Martha. Something had been bothering Matais for awhile, and he wanted to get it off his chest. He had been seeing more of Athena lately. They would get drinks after Parent group, go out for lunch when Matais could get away, their girls had play dates nearly every week. He thought it was time to finally ask Athena out. But first he needed to ask Parker…Luz had only been gone a few years and he didn’t know if it was too soon.
Matais: Hey nena, can I talk to you about something?
Parker: Is this about the frogs that got released in the science labs, because I swear that was Max’s idea-
Matais: What? That’s not what I was going to talk about at all! …Did you release frogs in the science lab?
Parker: Of course not, Papi. There is nothing that could possibly link me to roughly twenty juvenile frogs that may or may not have been released in the science lab. You’ll have to take your interrogation somewhere else to get your answers.
Matais: Alright, fine.
Matais: What I was going to say was, do you like Bethany’s mom Athena? Do you think she’s nice?
Parker: Papi, just stop. I already know where this is going and me and Bethany already have a bet going.
Matais: …You’ve been gambling with a three year old?
Parker: Yes, and in interest of my winnings, can I ask that you wait a month before asking Bethany’s mom out?
Max: So anything interesting go on?
Parker: Why do you gossip so much, huh? I feel like all we do is talk about ‘things we’ve heard’ and seen people doing.
Max: Leave me alone. I’m bored, okay.
Parker: Whatever. I think Papi’s gonna start dating a new lady.
Max: Really? Who?
Parker: Her name’s Athena. She seems nice. Her baby is cute.
Max: Athena? I know her! She lived with us for a little bit a few years ago.
Parker: Why? What was she doing at your place?
Max: I don’t know. She showed up one day and asked Dad if she could stay for a few days. I think she was pregnant then.
Parker: Was she married?
Max: She was, until her husband…dis-disappeared. *sniffle*
Both: …
Parker: You’re thinking about your mom, aren’t you?
Max: …Can we go back to playing?
Max: Hey, thanks for this Parker, you know I can’t do this at home.
Parker: Well, you could…
Max: No, I couldn’t. Luna would never let me hear the end of it. Remember when she found me just looking at her makeup?
Parker: I don’t get why people think boys can’t like dolls and makeup. What’s so weird about it? It’s just stuff.
The two continued to play until the sun started going down. Max started telling the story of how he heard Alex Goth talking about this weird dream he had about his mom getting abducted by aliens and no one ever saw her again.
Max: And then he said that in the end his sister Cassie married Don Lothario. But that would be weird, he’s like, 15 years older than her.
Parker: Max, I don’t really care about the weird stuff Alex dreams about.
Max: Wow, rude.
Parker: Don’t meme me boy. You wanna go play outside?
2 Months After the Funeral
Parker arrived home from school to find Martha at the piano, like always.
Martha: You ready to practice Parker?
Parker: About that…I was thinking more along the lines of inviting Max over.
Martha: Parker, we talked about this…piano first, then play-
Parker: He’s already here though, and it would be rude to tell him to go away. Martha, just one day without piano, pleeeeeaaaaaassssse?
Martha: Hmm, you can practice before bed instead…
Parker: Thank you Martha!
Parker ran to the front door to invite Max inside, and they went upstairs to Parker’s room.
Matais: Athena, I’m sorry I couldn’t find him.
Athena: Mati, don’t beat yourself up about it, it’s fine. I’m fine. Really.
She offers him a small smile.
Matais: I just…feel like I failed you. I’m sorr-
Athena: Mati. Stop. I knew when you didn’t find him after a few weeks that you probably never would. I’ve made my peace with it. I’ve moved on.
Gathering at the grave site.
It had been six months since the disappearance.
Athena decided to finally hold the funeral.
